چکیده

This paper introduces a new packet marking algorithm that can be used in the context of Assured Forwarding (AF) in the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) framework [1], [2]. The new marking algorithm is called Equation-Based Marking (EBM) and is based on the TCP model in [3]. EBM is to handle the problems found in other marking schemes regarding fairness among heterogeneous TCP flows through a tight feedback-loop operation and adaptation of the packet marking probability to network conditions. We design a packet marker that uses EBM as the marking algorithm, and evaluate its performance using in-depth simulation. We also prove analytically the correctness of the marking algorithm and compare it with other marking schemes for different network scenarios. Our evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of EBM in providing the required fairness among heterogeneous flows and ensuring protection against non-assured traffic.

TCP-aware packet marking in networks with DiffServ support

In the context of Differentiated Service, the Assured Forwarding class recently proposed by the IETF offers the capabilities of distinguishing two or more classes of packets, based on bit marking in packet headers. Originally, packet marking was intended to be performed according to the aggregate user-profile in the DiffServ model. In this paper we show the benefit of an alternative strategy in...

Adaptive packet marking for achieving fairness in DiffServ networks

Current Differentiated Services (DiffServ) networks supporting Assured Forwarding (AF) service succeed in providing minimum rate guarantees, but fail to distribute network capacity in a fair way. To address the unfairness problem we propose simple adaptive markers operating at the network edge, whose marking function adapts to changes of the traffic mix. Extensive simulation experiments indicat...

Transport of TCP/IP Traffic over Assured Forwarding IP Differentiated Services

The Internet is currently facing a twofold challenge: to increase network capacity in order to accommodate a steadily increasing number of users, and to guarantee the Quality of Service for existing applications as well as for new multimedia applications requiring real-time network response. In order to meet these requirements, the Internet Engineering Task Force is currently defining the Diffe...

Two-Differentiated Marking Strategies for TCP Flows in a Differentiated Services Network

The saw-tooth like behaviors of TCP impact Assured Forwarding Service flows in a differentiated services (diffserv) network. Therefore, we argue the use of TCP-friendly building blocks (or modules) and fairness modules in the diffserv architecture regarding this issue, and propose Two Markers System (TMS) that is able to properly mark packets and fairly share the bandwidth to each flow for thei...

On improving bandwidth assurance in AF-based DiffServ networks using a control theoretic approach

The Assured Forwarding (AF) based service in a Differentiated Services (DiffServ) network fails to provide bandwidth assurance among competing aggregates under certain conditions, for example, where there exists a large disparity in the round-trip times, packet sizes, or target rates of the aggregates, or there exist non-adaptive aggregates. Several mechanisms have been proposed in order to add...
